some words about "rumors and misinformation"

Nov 8, 2002

Dear Supervisors,

I am disturbed about the accusations of at least one of the Supervisors that Georgetown Divide residents are circulating "unfounded rumors and misinformation". I do not, for a minute, believe these accusations have merit.

If someone writes "Georgetown Airport will become a ghost field" it is the opinion of the author and assumes that the reader will draw their own conclusions based on the context of the statement.

If someone writes "The Airport will cease to exist as we know it" it is the opinion of the author and assumes that the reader will draw their own conclusions based on the context of the statement.

If someone writes "The long-term objective of the BOS seems to be the complete elimination of the Georgetown Airport" it is the opinion of the author and assumes that the reader will draw their own conclusions based on the context of the statement.

If it is statements such as these that are considered to be "unfounded rumors and misinformation" then those who make these claims may give the appearance of presuming that the readers of our community are unable to draw their own informed and educated conclusions.

Our Supervisors should also understand that their, and County, handling of the Georgetown Airport issue, present and past, gives some in our community ample reason the have and share sentiments like this.
